  • Pinterest Launches Motion-based Ads

Pinterest expanded its ad products on Tuesday with video ads called Cinematic Pins. They work much like Pinterest’s Promoted Pins, which are designed to blend in with other items in your home feed, but are motion-based. Brands like Gap, L’Oreal, Target, Unilever, Visa, Walgreens and Wendy’s are among the first paid advertisers.

Not to be confused with Facebook or Twitter style videos where the action begins when you pause over them and stops when you move away, Cinematic Pins are first encountered in motion as you scroll down, then stop when you cease scrolling.

Pinterest’s General Manager of Monetization, Tim Kendall, said, “Our view is that auto-play is interruptive. Users want to feel like they’re in control, and we’ve done a bunch of user testing—users are delighted by this experience. They wind up scrolling back and forth. They love controlling the motion.”

Pinterest to launch upgraded advertising solutions for digital marketers

    1. Audience Targeting Based What Users Plan To Do

Taking intent based marketing to a whole new level, marketers will be able to target audiences with Promoted Pins based on what users want in the future. Advertisers will engage people as they plan future purchases, as opposed to, say, searching for concert tickets to purchase in the moment. “People,” according to Pinterest, “do tons of different things on Pinterest, but most simply, it’s about discovering, saving and planning what to do next.”

    2. Ad Engagement Pricing

With cost per engagement (CPE) pricing, advertisers pay only when users take an action on a Promoted Pin, including repinning, clicking to see a pin close up or clicking through to an advertiser’s site. This model will help marketers track future intent.

Pinterest is already a map for a consumer’s journey. The new eye-catching Cinematic Pins will grab their share of attention, and provide more intent-driven data to marketers.

  • Pinterest Bans Affiliate Links

Pinterest announced some bad news for Bloggers and active power pinners who drive leads and earn revenue via affiliate marketing. Pinterest is set to ban affiliate networks on their site. Currently, affiliates are able to monetize pins by using a trackable link. These affiliates earn commissions from pins that produce conversions and/or drive traffic to their retail partners’ sites.

Why is this happening now? Pinterest does not earn any revenue from these affiliate links even though it has become a platform to facilitate them. The social network has not confirmed this, but the writing has been on the wall that Pinterest wants to leverage their network of pinners for their own monetization plans. First there was their “promoted pins”, and then partnership announcements with Apple and Stripe.

This really should not come as too much of a shock to the affiliate networks. Pinterest has banned affiliates before. Back in 2012, Pinterest cracked down on Amazon affiliate programs by removing the tracking tag from links directed to Amazon’s site. At the time, there were hundreds of other affiliates, but Pinterest selectively picked their battles instead of taking on the futile task of going after every affiliate network. Now, Pinterest will still be picking battles by going after larger networks, but the announcement has made it official, stating that they will “automatically remove all affiliate links, redirects and trackers on Pins.”

So Pinterest power users partnered with affiliate networks, you have been warned. Although as per Pinterest, the ban will not be a drastic rollout. Pinterest stated, “…all your past Pins will show up normally and still be clickable.” Sounds like a kind and gentle transition to being cut off, but forget about being able to track those pins. Pinterest also stated that affiliates are still welcome to get paid by curating boards or by working on paid social media marketing for their network partners.

  • Pinterest ‘Interest’, Facebook Paper and Graph Search for Mobile

    Pinterest ‘Interest’

With the launch of the ‘Interest’ tool, Pinterest is trying to make good on its aim to create new ways for users to find pins on the site. This tool is designed to help pinners find pins that they would be interested in.

    Pinterest Interest

Pinterest will be rolling out this tool worldwide and on to mobile devices soon.

To get started on pins related to your interests, you need to head over to the ‘Preview! Explore Interests’ option in the Categories menu on your desktop browser.

The current version of the ‘Interests’ tool is still in preview mode. Pinterest will be making improvements to it overtime.

    Impact on Businesses

Pinterest has already stepped into the advertising arena with the launch of Promoted Pins in 2013. At the time, CEO and co-founder Ben Silbermann assured users and advertisers that the promoted pins would be relevant to users’ interests.

‘Interesting’ development, the launch of the ‘Interest’ tool now, don’t you think?

Advertisers may eventually be able to target users with promoted pins that cater to relevant user interests using the user interest data available through the ‘Interest’ tool. Ben Silbermann’s assurance about catering to users’ interests especially makes you wonder if the launch of the ‘Interest’ tool is a part of Pinterest’s strategy to bring in more advertising revenue.
